SPOKANE — The Spokane Speed and Custom Show returns for another edition, April 10-11-12 at the Spokane Fair and Expo Center.
Launched in 2017 by Brian Anderson, the event has become Washington state’s largest all indoor car show.
When it began, the show sought to fill a void left by the legendary Spokane Auto Boat Speed Show that shuttered in 2012 after 49 years starting in 1963. That show, housed in many of the game buildings as Anderson’s event, was the idea of 1960s car and racing buffs, Don Wilbur and Orville Moe. Both recently passed away, Moe in 2015 and Wilbur in 2017.
“Yes (we’ve) been full for two months,” Anderson noted in a text message. The show will have in excess of 400 entries from across the country, in eight buildings, Anderson added.
Notable among entries and events are Butch Leal “The California Flash” drag racer. Staying with that theme is a “cackle fest” where four top-fuel cars will be pushed outdoors and fire up their nitro motors three different times as they fire up 6 p.m. Friday, noon and 6 p.m. Saturday.
ARP has sponsored a West Coast Challenge that was started in Spokane. It now has a 5-show West Coast circuit of shows. WCC entries. Have a chance at a $12,500 for first, $6,500 for second and $3,500 third place prize money.
WCC shows include the Grand National Roadster Show in Pomona Calif., the Portland Roadster Show, Spokane Speed and Custom Show, Medford Oregon Rod and Custom show and the Sacramento Autorama.
In addition, the Spokane Cup is awarded to the best “First-time show in Spokane” entry and is worth $5,000.
Also borrowing from Moe and Wilbur’s production, among other things this show will have a model car contest and 50-plus vendors.
