SPOKANE — Vince Zimmer lived for, among other things, racing — and maybe more specifically go-karts.
Zimmer passed away Aug. 6 and already, Zimmer’s son, Andrew, has worked to put together a way to remember his father. That will take place with the inaugural “Vince Zimmer 2-Hour Team Enduro” set for Sunday, Sept. 27 at Faskart Indoor Speedway at 5 p.m.
The race will pay the winning team $1,000.
“I told you I wanted to make this the one race we all look forward to every year in remembrance of my dad,” Andrew Zimmer wrote in a social media post. “If it wasn’t for my dad and him racing at Fastkart, I would have never probably gotten into karting that completely changed my life.”
There are simple guidelines to follow.
The race is limited to 10 teams of three and each driver must have two sessions at the wheel.
But there’s an additional twist, Zimmer said, that where one hour is spent driving forward, and another hour in reverse.
Entry cost is $250 per team ($273 with tax) with information available by visiting Zimmer Motorsports on Facebook.
Vince Zimmer, 75, was a dedicated kart racer and supporter of the sport, particularly with the Spokane Kart Racing Association. He was a motocross and shifter kart racer, a sponsor, his Andrew Zimmer wrote.
“Known to most as Vince, he was a familiar and beloved presence in the Spokane community. Many knew him as the longtime founder and owner of Spokane Alpine Haus, where his love of boating and skiing was part of his life’s work,” his obituary said.
“As part of Vince’s legacy, Spokane Alpine Haus Marina will continue to serve the community as it has for the past 50 years and will remain a lasting reflection of Vince, his love of the water, and honor his memory for generations to come,” the obit also said.
Vince is survived by his wife, Melody Zimmer; children, Josh Zimmer, Kelly Pryor, Chad Journey-Zimmer, Brian Zimmer, and Andrew Zimmer as well as a number of grandchildren.
A celebration of life honoring Vince is being planned, with details to be shared at a later date.
